LIQUEFACTION
How We Help

SPEZYME® alpha-amylases convert cooked starch to soluble dextrins in the liquefaction process. These dextrins may be converted to multiple products using different process steps with significant energy savings possible.

SPEZYME® POWERLIQ

SPEZYME® POWERLIQ is an alpha-amylase for starch hydrolysis. When used in starch liquefaction, the enzyme preparation is of excellent stability against high temperatures and low pH as well as little dependence on calcium levels, etc.

The technologies embodied in SPEZYME® POWERLIQ products provide benefits not optimized with traditional amylases alone.

Thorough and reliable removal of residual starch, leaving no iodine-staining material in dextrose hydrolysate.

Rapid viscosity reduction, allowing high solids liquefaction, with gains in throughput and reduced evaporation costs.

Minimal spin-tube sediment in dextrose hydrolysate, correlating with good hydrolysate filtration.

Operation at lower pH to minimize loss of dextrose to maltulose and color formation, reducing chemical and refining costs.

Operation without added calcium in most systems.

No process changes are required in most systems.

Optimal liquefaction is achieved in the range of 108 ± 2°C for the primary stage and up to 95°C for the secondary stage. Higher temperatures can favor improved filtration, particularly under conditions of poor starch quality, at the expense of the enzyme. Lower temperatures can lead to reduced hydrolysate clarity and residual iodine-staining material following saccharification.

SPEZYME® POWERLIQ is active over a wide range of pH, from 5.0 to 6.0. Optimal pH for liquefaction is 5.7± 0.3. The optimal pH range narrows and climbs slightly to pH 5.9 as temperature increases and/or calcium decreases.

A dosage of 0.2 kg per metric ton dry starch is typical. The precise dosage required will depend on process parameters including starch quality, pH, temperature, solids level, available reaction times, and other factors.
